Patients' experience of integrated care

By Cancer Campaigning Group (Novemebr 2012)

This report highlights the need for improvements in integrated care for cancer patients and calls for greater assessment of the experience of patients and carers when developing solutions and improvements. Five key areas where patients thought improvements could be made to deliver integrated care were: securing quicker referral from GPs to hospitals for testing and diagnosis; ensuring patients find out the results of their tests as quickly as possible; providing patients with access to a named clinical nurse specialist or other ‘key worker’ throughout the care pathway; supporting patients to feel involved in key decisions about their treatment and care; and putting systems in place to make sure records and test results are available to all clinicians and staff involved in patients’ care.

Updated recommendations for client- and provider-oriented interventions to increase breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening

Community Preventative Services Task Force, American Journal of Preventative Medicine, 2012; 43(1): 92-96

The Community Preventive Services Task Force (Task Force) recommends increasing screening for breast cancer through use of group education, one-on-one education, client reminders, reducing client out-of-pocket costs, and provider assessment and feedback; increasing screening for cervical cancer through use of one-on-one education, client reminders, and provider assessment and feedback; and increasing screening for colorectal cancer through use of one-on-one education, client reminders, reducing structural barriers to screening, and provider assessment and feedback. The Task Force found insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of increasing screening for breast cancer through use of client incentives, mass media, or provider incentives; for cervical cancer screening through use of group education, client incentives, mass media, reducing client out-of-pocket costs, reducing structural barriers, or provider incentives; and for colorectal cancer screening through use of group education, client incentives, mass media, reducing client out-of-pocket costs, or provider incentives. Details of these findings, and some considerations for use, are provided in this article.

Improving capacity, saving lives: endoscopy in the UK

By Bowel Cancer UK (2012)

This briefing shows that despite the Government’s aspiration to diagnose people earlier, groups or individuals who need to undergo regular endoscopic procedures because they are at higher risk of bowel cancer (for example, because of a genetic condition or an inflammatory bowel condition) are not getting the timely surveillance they require.

The way forward: strategic clinical networks

By NHS Commissioning Board

The NHS Commissioning Board Authority has set out its plan for a small number of national networks to improve health services for specific patient groups or conditions. Called strategic clinical networks, these organisations will build on the success of network activity in the NHS which, over the last 10 years, has led to significant improvements in the delivery of patient care.

Strategic clinical networks, hosted and funded by the NHS Commissioning Board (NHS CB), will cover conditions or patient groups where improvements can be made through an integrated, whole system approach. These networks will help local commissioners of NHS care to reduce unwarranted variation in services and encourage innovation.
