Diabetes 2015: Care in Crisis: a survey highlighting the views of people with diabetes and how that relates to the reality of today's NHS

This report outlines the results of a survey of over 15,000 people with diabetes and found that 40 per cent of those surveyed believe that the NHS has “worsened” since the reforms. It also found that 37 per cent were not given appropriate advice and information about diet and exercise at the time of diagnosis. It calls on the government to introduce a specialist diabetes organisation which would work with the clinical community to drive improvements in care and stresses that CCGs should be more strongly encouraged to follow NICE commissioning guidance for diabetes education courses.

State of the nation: challenges for 2015 and beyond

This report argues that diabetes healthcare in England is leading to avoidable deaths, record rates of complications and huge costs to the NHS. The findings of this research show that there has been very little overall improvement in diabetes healthcare in the past year, with 40 per cent of people with diabetes still not getting the NICE recommended checks that they need to manage their condition. It calls for CCGs to set themselves performance improvement targets and implement diabetes action plans.

Managing the care of people with long-term conditions

This report finds that 15 million NHS patients in England with long-term conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and asthma account for 70% of the annual expenditure of the NHS in England. It argues that demographic and cost pressures on the NHS from patients with long-term conditions is only likely to increase in the coming years, with one projection estimating that the bill for treatment of long-term conditions will require the NHS to find £4 billion more each year by 2016.

This report highlights the continuing challenge that diabetes continues to present to the NHS and that quality of care is uneven throughout the country. Checking against NICE standards people who live in the best-performing CCG area are four times more likely to be given eight of the vital health checks recommended by NICE as compared to people living in the worst-performing area. It argues that diabetes care is adequately funded but that the focus of the spending should be on prevention rather than treatment.

National diabetes audit 2011-2012: report 1: care processes and treatment targets

This report shows wide variation in achieving the 140/80 blood pressure target between CCGs and local health boards (LHBs). Some CCGs and LHBs met this target in 53 per cent of cases but in others it was met in less than 44 per cent of cases. The figures show over 1.2 million patients had not met the blood pressure target of less than 140/80 for the 2.3 million patients with diabetes in England and Wales whose blood pressure was recorded.
