Good nutrition is important during pregnancy, breastfeeding and early life to optimise the health of women and children. It is difficult for low-income families to prioritise spending on healthy food. Healthy Start is a targeted United Kingdom (UK) food subsidy programme that gives vouchers for fruit, vegetables, milk, and vitamins to low-income families. This paper reports an evaluation of Healthy Start from the perspectives of women and health practitioners.

This article states that attempts to reduce high rates of teenage pregnancy and motherhood are unlikely to succeed if young women continued to face environmental risk and uncertainty. Environmental risk, including factors such as crime and vandalism, are a clear predictor of early pregnancy. Rather than investing in educational programmes, money would be better spent on the maintenance of at-risk neighbourhoods.

The South East region of the Health Protection Agency funded a short term project during February and March 2012 to investigate the attitudes of pregnant women and healthcare professionals with regard to influenza immunisations and to explore models of good practice. The project group was tasked with producing this resource pack for NHS organisations to use in both primary and secondary care settings to assist them to increase their influenza immunisation uptake rates in pregnant women.
