Use of health and social care by people with cancer

By The Nuffield Trust (2014)

This report presents the results of a study into the primary, secondary and social care use of people diagnosed with cancer. Improved survival rates, earlier detection and an ageing population have led to cancer incidence increasing, but it is now seen as a chronic condition rather than necessarily a fatal illness. This shift has led to a growing focus on survivorship, and on the long-term needs of those living with and after cancer. To find out how this impacts on the use of health and social care services, the study used data linkage methods to track the patterns of service use across health and social care in the year after people were diagnosed with cancer. It shows clear evidence of a social services response to a person being diagnosed with cancer.

National care of the dying audit for hospitals, England: National report 2014

By The Royal College of Physicians (2014)

This report has found significant variations in care across hospitals in England.  The audit shows that major improvements need to be made to ensure better care for dying people, and better support for their families, carers, friends and those important to them. While previous audits had been based on the goals of care within the Liverpool Care Pathway for the Dying Patient (LCP), the new audit sampled the care of dying people in hospital, regardless of whether they were supported by the LCP or other care pathways or frameworks, and included more hospitals than the previous audits.

Accountable care organisations in the United States and England: testing, evaluating and learning what works

By The King’s Fund (2014)

The health system in England is facing a number of challenges including an ageing population, an increasing number of people with multiple, long-term conditions and a difficult financial climate. To meet these challenges, more integrated approaches to care delivery are needed to improve both the quality of care and patients’ experience. In the United States, ACOs – a group of providers that take responsibility for providing all the care for a given population for a specified period of time – have been developed to provide a more integrated approach to care. This paper describes the different types of ACOs emerging in the United States; presents some early evidence on their performance; assesses the future for ACOs; and discusses the implication of these developments for integrated care initiatives in England.

A better life: valuing our later years

By Joseph Rowntree Foundation (2013)

Hundreds of thousands of older people need  a great deal of support. This book presents a  vision of what life can be like, and should be  like, for all of us as we get older. This vision is  not unattainable, it is about being recognised  as individuals, with our own passions,  preferences and interests. It is about having a  network of meaningful relationships, about  being able to get the right support – no  matter where we live. It is about being looked  after by staff who are confident, who are able  to relate to us and who are appreciated for  the work they do. It is about new ideas, but  also simple things that can matter a lot, like  being able to get outdoors. It is about older  people speaking up and driving change.

Towards whole person care

This paper reviews the case for change in the English health and care system and considers how to move towards a ‘whole person care’ approach. It sets out broad themes on creating a health and care system that is fit for the future. It makes a case for a number of person-centred guarantees at the heart of the vision for whole person care, focused on people with long-term conditions and older people.

Compare your care: the asthma reports

By Asthma UK (2013)

Asthma UK wanted to know whether the care that people were receiving for their asthma matched up to the standards they should expect so they launched the Compare Your Care quiz. This report presents the findings and shows that there are some aspects of asthma care which many people are receiving. However, it finds that not everyone is receiving care that fully meets standards and some simple but effective aspects of care that could help prevent asthma attacks are not consistently being provided. The reports also include recommendations to help the NHS improve asthma care across the UK.
