National child measurement programme: operational guidance for the 2013/14 school year

The guidance supports local authorities to meet their new statutory duty to deliver the NCMP, which measures the height and weight of children in reception and Year 6 annually. Until March 2013, primary care trusts were responsible for delivering the programme, but on 1 April 2013 local authorities became responsible for NCMP. PHE is working with local authorities to support them in delivering the programme.

Healthy young minds, healthy communities conference

This is a report of an event held jointly by RSPH and the Institute of Health Visiting which was designed to explore the extraordinarily close links between early experiences, both in the womb and as a young infant, and the health of the community and public. It mentions the topics covered by the conference, including identifying the evidence base for the impact of early experience during pregnancy and the first two years in infants and young children, the implications of the evidence for health visiting practice and the public mental health implications of the evidence for policy makers.

The school food plan

Almost a fifth of UK children are obese by the time they leave primary school. Good food provision in schools has been shown to lead not only to healthier children, but to improved attainment. This report sets out a plan to transform what children eat at school, and how they learn about food. It includes clear actions for government and for head teachers. The independent school food plan website provides information and resources to support these actions.

No teenager with cancer left out: the impact of cancer on young people's secondary school education

This report found that not providing young people with the extra support they need after treatment for cancer could jeopardise their education and prevent them from fulfilling their potential. And nearly four out of 10 (38%) secondary school teachers say there is not enough information or guidance to support a pupil with cancer.

SAFER communication guidelines

It also places strong emphasis on accountability, encouraging all stakeholders to take responsibility for local care through an agreed annual delivery plan within key delivery areas.
