A measure of change: an evaluation of the impact of the public health transfer to local authorities on alcohol

It is based on a survey of CCGs, Directors of Public Health and service providers in 30 local authority areas. It finds a greater focus on alcohol issues but expresses concerns over funding.

Public Health Outcomes Framework: overarching indicators

The Public Health Outcomes Framework data tool has been updated and indicators on cancers diagnosed at an early stage have been included as a preliminary data for the first time. Alcohol-related hospital admissions from the Local Alcohol Profiles for England have also been added. The web-based tool, which is refreshed quarterly, brings together available indicators from the framework to help local authorities and others understand how well public health is being improved and protected. The next update is due in August.

Electronic cigarettes: a report commissioned by Public Health England

These reports, commissioned by PHE, examine the evidence on risks and opportunities presented by electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes takes a broad look at the issues relating to e-cigarettes including their role in tobacco harm reduction, potential hazards, potential benefits and regulation. E-cigarette uptake and marketing examines use of e-cigarettes by children and young people, the scale and nature of current marketing and its implications, in particular in relation to its potential appeal to young people.

Public health in government: 1 year on

Quality standards for effective alcohol and drug education

The standards – comprising statements explaining the criteria for meeting each requirement – are coupled with the following supporting tools: further reading and resources; examples of how standards might be evidenced; self assessment forms. These standards have drawn on existing national and international guidance as well as examples of good practice in alcohol and drug education and prevention. The set of standards include: delivering effective alcohol and drug education in the classroom as part of a planned PSHE programme; school context for effective alcohol and drug education; staff policies and safeguarding.

The future of public health: a horizon scan

Public Health England (PHE) commissioned RAND Europe to undertake a horizon scanning study exploring the future of public health and related scientific services. This work was intended to help inform thinking at the strategic level within PHE, firstly in relation to the wider vision of the Agency and, secondly, in relation to the proposals for the creation of an integrated public health science hub. The report focuses on the different future public health science needs and the extent to which an integrated science hub could serve PHE as it evolves over the next twenty years.
