Sarcoma Awareness Month- July 2021: Where can I find out more?

#SarcomaAwarenessMonth runs for the whole of July. Did you know that bone sarcomas affect less than 500 people in the UK each year, making it a very rare form of cancer?

Also, not all bone cancers will be sarcomas. Soft tissue sarcomas can affect any part of the body; they develop in supporting or connective tissue such as the muscle, nerves, fatty tissue, and blood vessels.

Throughout July, The Christie Library will be highlighting resources which can help you find out more about this rare form of bone cancer.

If you’re a Christie member of staff, you can use your NHS OpenAthens account to access ClinicalKey.

ClinicalKey gives you instant access to:

  • Full-text reference books and journals including Lancet Oncology, Cancer Treatment Reviews and Journal of the American College of Radiology.
  • Clinical Overviews that provide succinct, easy-to-navigate summaries for quick answers
  • Medical and procedure videos and images
  • Customizable patient education handouts
  • Practice guidelines
  • Clinical calculators and more

There is lots of information to find in your ClinicalKey account about this disease here: https://www.clinicalkey.com/#!/search/sarcoma

If you are a member of Christie staff and need assistance setting up an NHS OpenAthens account or you would like to know more about ClinicalKey, contact us on 0161 446 3452 or e-mail The-Christie.Library@.nhs.net

Christie Library Christmas Newsletter

Happy Christmas
and a wonderful new decade

Click here for holiday opening times

New manager, old manager

After nearly 5 years at the Christie, the current manager Mary Hill is retiring. Dan Livesey will be taking over, bringing a fresh look to the library team. He has been blessed with the most wonderful library team to support him in taking the library service into the new decade. Exciting times ahead…

Virtual Reality – time to try out in 2020

Do visit the library to try out the VR equipment.

You can travel through the proton beam gantry stopping to find out what various areas/equipment do; you can become frail; take some medical training in A&E; sit and experience a relaxing world and many other things.

Journals for 2020

We have had to make some savings so we no longer subscribe to some journals but have tried to keep as many as possible going. The titles we no longer have access to are

  1. Oncology Nursing Forum
  2. Nurse Education Today

However the pathologists have access to this journal (department sponsored)
International Journal of Gynecological Pathology

Due to a change in the way the journal is provided we now have access not only to the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) but also the following

  1. JCO Oncology Practicekeeps oncology practices current on changes and challenges inherent in delivering high-quality oncology care.
  2. JCO Clinical Cancer Informatics disseminates clinically relevant research based on biomedical informatics methods and processes applied to cancer-related information.
  3. JCO Precision Oncologyprovides information to advance the science and practice of precision oncology and define genomics-driven clinical care of patients with cancer.
  4. JCO Global Oncologyopen access journal focused on cancer care, research and care, delivery issues unique to countries and settings with limited healthcare resources
  5. ASCO Educational Book published yearly highlighting the most compelling research and developments across the multidisciplinary fields of oncology

So what is the best way to access an article?

If you have a proper reference e.g.
Ray-Coquard I, Pautier P, Pignata S, Pérol D, González-Martín A, Berger R, et al. Olaparib plus Bevacizumab as First-Line Maintenance in Ovarian Cancer. New England Journal of Medicine. 2019 Dec 19;381(25):2416–28

Go to BrowZine > Type in NEJM (or New England Journal of Medcine) > Find Vol 381 Issue 25 and scroll down to page 2416. OpenAthens may be required but this is a really simple system.

If you want to find a set of articles on a topic
Then you need to use the Healthcare Databases but remember to login via the Login for all databases button. We offer training on this. Link is internal

Library services

Don’t forget that the library offers a literature searching service to support work improvement projects and research. We also offer training in:

  • Advanced literature searching
  • Introduction to critical appraisal
  • Using a reference manager e.g. Mendeley

Training can be via our programme, one to one or customised to your department.

Look out for our new set of training lunch time bites on understanding journal impact factors, relative risk and study types.

Journals at The Christie for 2019

our journals

New Addition for 2019: JCO Precision Oncology

Cancellations for 2019: European Journal of Palliative Care; JNCI Journal of the National Cancer Institute

You have access to many hundreds of journals.  Do ask if you can’t find what you need.  Sometimes you just need to look in a different place.

I have a reference and I want to find the full text to the article.

Method 1:
Library HIVE page
> Select eJournals from the icons or side bar
> type in title of journal and submit
> It will tell you if we don’t have full text access or any restrictions to access
> If we do, find the year, volume, issue and title of the article and click to download
> OpenAthens may be required

Method 2:
Library Internet page
> as above.  Site available from anywhere
Capture

Browzine is available as an app.
Read about it here.

Method 3: (this may not be as up to date as Browzine.)
unnamed
On either of the links above, select the icon for Library Catalogue

> type in the title of the journal and click on the link.  You might need to select from several supplier so look at the dates and choose the one that matches your requirement.
> Enter your OpenAthens details at a link that specifies OpenAthens
> Find your article using the title or year, vol, issue

But my article isn’t available full text!

> You will have to request an inter library loan which usually costs £5 but we can advise you on the cost
> This can be done from the Library HIVE page but not externally
> Do not waste time, you can always ring or email for help!

Actually, I want to search for articles about a topic!

To do that you will need to search the databases such as Medline, Embase or Cinahl
hdasA link to the NHS database search can be found using the Library HIVE or Internet link .

> The Library Service offers training courses to help you do this more effectively.  There are some elearning modules you can take or you can ask for a 1-to-1 session
> you can also search the Trip database and PubMed

If you are stuck at any point do ask the library staff for help.  That is what we do!

Nursing journals – what should we take?

What do these journals and these journals have in common?

They are all:

  1. Nursing journals
  2. Available to all Christie nurses with an NHS OpenAthens
  3. Are currently being poorly used.

At the moment the Library & Knowledge Service can not justify taking these journals.  We are trying to find out why this is happening and asking you to think about if a different selection might meet your needs better.  Unfortunately we have to work with a limited budget so we can’t buy all the journals that you might request but we want to produce a better used collection than at the moment.

On the other hand it might be that you just don’t know how to find and access journalsIf this is the case, contact the library for an update or attend one of our training courses

So should we cancel them?

What should we buy in their place?

Have your say on the future provision of journals for you.  We are attempting to email all nurses to tell you about a survey which we want you to complete.  The link is available on the library page on the intranet (Hive > Department > Library).  Make sure you have your say.  The survey closes on 19th October 2018

Do we have access to this journal?

Recently we were surprised to be told we do not take Lancet Oncology, Cancer Research and the Annals of Oncology.  We are pleased to announce this is fake news. We do take all 3 top journals.  So the problem must be access.  Here we will guide you through how to access these and other journals within and outside the Trust.

As with anything available electronically, there are many ways that you can access these journals.  For this we will presume you either have a reference you want to find or you just want to browse the current issue of the journal.

Start with eJournals link on our front page and simply enter the title of the journal and search.  It should take you to the latest issue but also give you accessCapture4 to Articles in Press . For Lancet Oncology and the Annals of Oncology  when you click on an article, this works without a problem.  They will ask you for your OpenAthens and you will be into your article.

Unfortunately Cancer Research and the other AACR journals do not use OpenAthens do you now have to click on the link to the web site where you do have access to full text anywhere within the Trust – great news!

cr

So now you have accessed these 3 journals you can explore our eJournal link to find other journals.  Unfortunately this only links to journal issues from the beginning of 2007.  It will redirect you for older articles

Outside The Trust, you use the same process but from our external page.  Lancet Oncology and Annals of Oncology and many other journals work from this link but this time I am afraid you do not have access to Cancer Research and the other AACR journals.  They are only available within the Trust.

One really nice thing about this  eJournal search tool is that it is available as an App
