Health Literacy Month – October 2021: Empowering patients with information

Health Literacy Month runs each October and aims to empower patients and the public with knowledge, information, understanding, skills, and confidence in relation to their health.

As Christie colleagues we can help to support patients and carers with the patient-friendly resources available to us through our electronic subscriptions. Providing this information ensures patients are absorbing accurate and appropriate information on their health conditions and feel empowered and confident when discussing their conditions with healthcare professionals.

ClinicalKey offers a variety of resources with the aim of educating patients. They have guides on various tests which patients may be required to undergo, areas of anatomy, and plain-language descriptions of common health conditions. These resources can be filtered by the specialty of ‘Oncology’ to help you find the best resources for your patients.

BMJ Best Practice also has a list of resources written with patients in mind. There is a search box at the top of this list which can be used to discover specific resources that will be useful for your patients.
