October 10th is #WorldMentalHealthDay! A reminder that staff can borrow books for pleasure #librariesweek @wmhday

Day two of our posts for Libraries Week coincides with World Mental Health day, so given the health benefits of reading for pleasure we thought we would highlight some of the books in our collection that staff can borrow.

 The library has a collection of fiction and also health and well-being books on topics such as mindfulness, fitness, cooking and more.

Books can be borrowed 24/7 once you have joined the library, and you can always suggest we purchase a particular title.

Welcome to the first blogpost in a series as it is Libraries Week! This week we aim to communicate the basics about the Trust library service.

Where is the library?

The library is department 60 and is on the second floor. The easiest way to access the library is to take the stairs/lift by Pharmacy on the ground floor, then follow the doctors corridor around following the signs for the education centre. If you get lost call us on 3452 or drop us an email (library@christie.nhs.uk) for more detailed instructions.

The library is open to all Christie Staff and Volunteers!

When is the library open?

It is open 24/7 to staff via swipe card access, and volunteers can come into the library space within staffed hours which are 9am – 5.30 pm Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

#stoptober resources for Christie staff @stoptober

Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking campaign from Public Health England, is back from 1st October.

Stoptober has driven over 1 million quit attempts to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for 28-days, you are five times more likely to stay smokefree for good.

Here are some of the resources the library has for staff on smoking cessation and tobacco research.

Macmillan Coffee Morning Roundup 2017

Last Friday we had another Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Library entrance and it was a big success thanks to everyone who baked, ate or both!

We managed to raise £154.50 which we are delighted with!

Finding the evidence training

We offer a number of courses, all of which are FREE

  • An Introduction to Literature Searching Learn how to find journal articles and current research using databases like NICE Evidence Search and Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS). The techniques here can be applied to finding management information. This course it suitable for people who have never searched before and those wanting a refresher.   • Finding the Evidence Day On this day we offer 3 modules.  You can take any combination of these from 1 to 3. Advanced Literature Searching Learn how to find the best evidence using the Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) using advanced techniques. The techniques used here can be applied to finding management information. Suitable for people who have done the previous course or who have done some searching. This course is essential for anyone doing a systematic review.
  • Critical Appraisal, an Introduction Learn to critical appraise an article using the CASP checklist. Suitable for anyone who has to read journal articles either professionally or educationally. It is particularly suitable for those who have not done it before or who lack confidence in this area.   • Finding Library eResources Learn how to access the Christie library resources and services, enabling you to find quality information quickly.  Particularly useful for those new to the Trust or unfamiliar with finding good quality health information. Staff Coffee Morning 2017 – in aid of Macmillan

After the success of last year’s coffee morning we will be hosting another one this year!

It will take place on 29th September from 10am to 1pm in the old Consultant’s Lounge (now the Networked Services meeting room) right outside the Library (Dept 60)

All staff are welcome to pop along!

If you feel like baking something to bring along, just let us know. We look forward to seeing staff for a fun morning of coffee, cake and chat.

DawsonEra eBooks – available now!

An exciting new book collection has been made available for NHS staff in Greater Manchester and Christie staff can now access many new eBooks via DawsonEra!

This blog post is based on a resource created by Paula Elliott, the Library Manager at Royal Bolton Hospital, and will help you to easily Find, Access and Use the resources!

There are 244 free eBook resources, spanning across the specialities as well as many titles on mentoring and leadership. There are also many cancer specific titles too!

Use

Dawsonera has one main search box and some browse options:

Searches can be refined using the options to the left of the results list. You can also do a more specific search by using the Advanced Search option near the search box.

Click to remove the tick from the Show unowned content box; click the Update button and you will see a list of the free ebooks you have access to.

Options for accessing Unowned content:

Preview = 5 minutes to look at the first 50 pages

Pay to rent ebook = choose which option suits you and pay online with your debit/credit card

Suggest for purchase = send an e-mail to Library staff so the title can be considered for addition to the collection
