Enhanced supportive care is increasingly seen at the forefront of the prevention and management of the adverse effects of cancer as well as cancer treatments. There has never been more of a need for oncology and supportive care services to interface seamlessly and provide a joined-up approach for the care of our patients.
On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th March 2022, the ESCTOX / UKASCC conference will bring together speakers from across the globe to share their expertise and knowledge around supportive care and conditions associated with cancer and its treatment.
In conjunction with the conference, we have put together a selection of resources which you might find useful about supportive care in oncology.
Many links will ask you to log in with OpenAthens to access the full-text access, if you have any trouble accessing something, please get in touch with your NHS Trust Library.

On 31st March 2022 HDAS will be closing due to accessibility requirements and therefore will no longer be available.
HDAS would have required a complete rebuild to meet all accessibility requirements and achieve compliance with the 2018 Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations. NICE and Health Education England (HEE), as partners in the delivery of knowledge and library infrastructure for the NHS in England, carried out a review of the options and of the other search services that are available to novice and expert users. As a result of this review, NICE and the HEE reached the conclusion that there was not a viable strategic or economic case to re-build HDAS.
In place of HDAS we will be using database provider interfaces: OVID, EBSCO or ProQuest, Any searches or alerts set up on HDAS will need to be transferred over to these. We have created a HIVE page containing information, guides, and useful links on how to get started with the database provider interfaces: OVID, EBSCO and ProQuest.
In summary
From 1st April 2022 onwards:
So that you can prepare for the closure please visit the NICE HDAS closure page for information on the steps you need to take to export saved searches from HDAS as well as the interfaces that you can now use to search the literature. We have also added this information to our local Christie HDAS Closure Information HIVE page as well as creating HIVE pages for each of the three platforms:
Additionally, we have begun to provide Literature Search training sessions on these provider interfaces. You can find dates of all of our scheduled training sessions on our HIVE ‘Training’ page.
If you need further help moving your saved searches and alerts from HDAS to provider interfaces we have created a guide for each of the platforms: OVID, EBSCO, ProQuest. Resources have also been gathered by HEE with guides on using the provider interfaces.
For each of these platforms you will need both an active Christie OpenAthens account and a local account to each platform. (If you don’t have an OpenAthens account you can register for one here.) Once you have logged in to them with your OpenAthens username and password you will need to create local accounts to save your searches and alerts:
As a part of this change, HEE have implemented a new national search interface. The local Christie search page will link you to the resources we subscribe to, including journals and e-books, as well as the database provider interfaces (OVID, EBSCO, ProQuest, etc.). You can find The Christie Knowledge and Library Hub here.
The library is here to help with this transition so please contact us either at the-christie.library@nhs.net or telephone 0161 446 3452 if you have any questions or need some assistance. Alternatively you can contact the team at NICE at nice@nice.org.uk.
Movember is all about raising awareness of men’s health. It is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, penile cancer and men’s suicide.
Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.
The library here at the Christie has a wealth of resources on the subject of cancers which are common in men.
The Christie Repository
The Christie Repository is a collection of Christie published research. Christie authors have their papers added to the repository by the Library and Knowledge Service Team.

Health Literacy Month runs each October and aims to empower patients and the public with knowledge, information, understanding, skills, and confidence in relation to their health.
As Christie colleagues we can help to support patients and carers with the patient-friendly resources available to us through our electronic subscriptions. Providing this information ensures patients are absorbing accurate and appropriate information on their health conditions and feel empowered and confident when discussing their conditions with healthcare professionals.
ClinicalKey offers a variety of resources with the aim of educating patients. They have guides on various tests which patients may be required to undergo, areas of anatomy, and plain-language descriptions of common health conditions. These resources can be filtered by the specialty of ‘Oncology’ to help you find the best resources for your patients.
A few resources which may be useful for Christie patients:
BMJ Best Practice also has a list of resources written with patients in mind. There is a search box at the top of this list which can be used to discover specific resources that will be useful for your patients.
A few resources which may be useful for Christie patients:
UpToDate also has a section called ‘Patient Education’ containing lists of resources to educate patients. You can select ‘Cancer’ as a category and browse the list of resources available for your patients.
A few resources which may be useful for Christie patients:
The Library is here to support you to support your patients, so let us know if you need any assistance from us in retrieving information or finding trustworthy resources. We offer a literature searching service which can be beneficial in retrieving evidence-based information for you to pass on to your patients.
All of these resources are available to you with an active OpenAthens account. If you would like to find out more about setting an account up, please get in touch with us on 0161 446 3452 or email The-Christie.Library@.nhs.net. Alternately, you can register for an account yourself via the online OpenAthens registration form.
