Over the last year, Library Services have been forced to adapt and change at the Christie.
In March 2020, Christie Library staff began working from home in an effort to reduce footfall across the Trust.
However, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the library is still open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and while our library staff might not be there, we are available virtually and we can assist with any of your evidence and information needs.
We have written this blog to answer a few of the questions which we have been asked recently:
What is the best way to contact the library?
Since library staff are not in the physical library at the moment, you can e-mail the-christie.library@nhs.net or call us on 0161 446 3456.
Both channels are monitored between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.
If you contact us outside of these times, we will be sure to get in touch with you the next working day.
Is the Library still open?
The physical library remains open 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
How do I get access to the library?
Anyone with a Christie ID badge can swipe their card at the entrance.
Where is the library?
The Library is based in Department 60 at the hospital at Withington.
For more detailed instructions on how to find us, head over to our Library page on HIVE.
What happens if I need to borrow a book from the library?
You can still access our book collection and our Library catalogue: click here to view it online.
You will need a Library barcode to use our self-service machines in the library. This will allow you to issue, return and renew books yourself.
To request a barcode, send an e-mail request to us at the-christie.library@nhs.net and we will set up a barcode for you. We will notify you when it is ready to collect.
What if I need literature search or critical appraisal training?
Our training programme is being delivered virtually (Microsoft Teams). You can sign on to any of our training here on HIVE (intranet link)
Why not read our latest blog on the Library 2021 training programme.
Are you still performing literature/evidence searches?
We are! You can find out how to request a literature search here on HIVE (intranet link)
Can non-clinical staff access the library and what do you have available?
The Library and our services are accessible to all Christie staff.
If you’re working on site, why not take a visit and check out all of our great resources including:
• Study area (including a silent study zone)
• PCs and printing facilities
• Fiction collection
• Health and Wellbeing collection
• Non-fiction collection (leadership, research skills, IT skills, managing people, graphic design, academic writing, project management, marketing, etc.)
What is the Library doing around COVID-19 and the evidence related to Oncology?
Over the past 8 months, the Library has been working closely with Dr Alison Backen to distribute an evidence summary bulletin on COVID-19 and Oncology. If you would like to sign up to receive this bulletin, please contact the library and let us know.
Many of our evidenced based resources (UpToDate, BMJ Best Practice) have sections related to treatment of COVID-19 patients.
To find out more, contact the library and we will happily assist with access.
What’s new with the Library?
We are delighted to announce that the Christie now subscribes to BMJ Case Reports. This subscription is funded by the Library and the School of Oncology Medical Education Department.
With the Christie BMJ Case Reports subscription, anyone can publish a case report for free.
To find out more, visit our BMJ Case Report pages on HIVE for author support and instructions on how to submit.
How can the library help Christie staff virtually?
While our library staff are not available on site, we are still here for you.
If you require any assistance with:
• Evidence/literature searches – click here to view intranet page
• Book enquiries
• A training needs (critical appraisal, literature searching, citation management) – you can register for training here on HIVE
• Article requests – click here for intranet request form
• Support accessing the physical library
You can get in touch with us by email and we can contact you via Microsoft Teams. This means we can troubleshoot and provide 1-to-1 support with any of our resources.
Happy New Year to all of our Christie staff and patients
