International Journal of Positive Behavioural Support – Issue 1, 2019

Issue 1 of International Journal of Positive Behavioural Support has been published.  This edition includes articles on the impact of a brief PBS assessment on four children with intellectual disabilities and their families,  a cross sectional study of trauma symptomatology among staff working with people with intellectual disabilities who present challenging behaviour, and a review of restraint, prolonged seclusion and segregation for people with a mental health problem, a learning disability or autism.

Support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in England

This report assesses how well children with special education needs and disabilities are being supported in schools in England.  The report finds that the system for supporting children with SENDS is not financially sustainable and calls for the government to secure improvements in quality and sustainability which are needed to ensure value for money.

Preventing falls in people with learning disabilities

This guide contains information to help staff in public health, health services and social care to prevent falls in people with learning disabilities. It is also intended to help falls prevention services to provide support that is accessible to people with learning disabilities. The guide aims to be of use to family carers, friends and paid support staff to help them think about what risks may contribute to falls and how to reduce such risks.

Celebrate me: capturing the voices of learning disability nurses and people who use services

This initiative aimed to engage with nurses and people using services to gather evidence and demonstrate the impact of learning disability nursing, from experience, to help sustain its future. The outcomes from the extensive engagement have enabled us to highlight everything that there is to celebrate about learning disability nursing (the impact) and what needs to be championed for the future (to sustain it), from the voices of learning disability nurses and those of people with a learning disability and their families.

Far less than they deserve: children with learning disabilities or autism living in mental health hospitals

This report finds that too many children are being admitted to secure hospitals unnecessarily – in some cases are spending months and years of their childhood in institutions rather than being treated in their communities. It warns that the current system of support for those with learning disabilities or autism is letting down some of the most vulnerable children in the country.

It aims to help staff in dental teams to provide services that are accessible to people with learning disabilities. There is information about how learning disability staff can support this. It is also intended to be of use to family carers and paid supporters who help someone with their daily oral care and with accessing dental services.
