Mental health services: meeting the need for capital investment

There has been prolonged under-investment in facilities across the English NHS. However, while restricted capital funding is affecting all sectors of the NHS, there is a particular need for capital investment within the mental health sector. This briefing summarises the findings of a survey NHS Providers sent to NHS mental health trusts and foundation trusts to gather further evidence on the sector’s capital funding needs, to support the case they are making for the sector to receive its fair share of capital investment in future.

Health equity in England: The Marmot Review 10 years on

Ten years since the publication of The Marmot Review, for the first time in more than one hundred years life expectancy has failed to increase across the country, and for the poorest ten per cent of women it has actually declined. Over the past decade health inequalities have widened overall, and the amount of time people spend in poor health has increased since 2010. Because health is closely linked to the circumstances in which we are born, grow, live, work and age, large funding cuts, under the banner of austerity, have had an adverse effect.

Case study of ‘My Right to Healthcare’ cards which explain the rights of homeless people to accessing GPs

The cards were given to people experiencing homelessness for them to show when registering at a GP surgery. They emphasise that no identification or proof of address or immigration status is needed to register with a GP.

Population health management (PHM) – the use of data to identify specific groups within a population that may have similar characteristics and similar needs, and develop targeted interventions to meet those needs – was a notable theme of the NHS long-term plan. But it’s something that clinical commissioners have been doing for some time. This report brings together PHM stories from 10 different areas of England – led by clinical commissioners – to demonstrate the progress that has already been made in advancing this approach to health care, and what more will need to be done.

NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard: 2019 data analysis report for NHS trusts

The 2019 Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) report is the fifth publication, since the WRES was mandated and covers all nine indicators. It also compares data against previous years. The report has the following key roles: to enable organisations to compare their performance with others in their region and those providing similar services, with the aim of encouraging improvement by learning and sharing good practice; and to provide a national picture of WRES in practice, to colleagues, organisations and the public on the developments in the workforce race equality agenda.
