Infusion pumps deliver fluid and drugs to the patient in a controlled and safe way. They are designed to alert the nurses and doctors to when infusions need to be replaced or changed and so have lights and alarms which intermittently occur. This can sometimes sound or look worrying but it is perfectly safe. The nurses will spend a lot of time safely preparing and checking the infusions as these can consist of antibiotics, sedation and cardiovascular supporting drugs.
