Improving care by using patient feedback
The National Institute for Health Research has published Improving care by using patient feedback. This themed review features nine new research studies about using patient experience data in the NHS which show what organisations are doing now and what could be done better. The evidence ranges from hospital wards to general practice to mental health settings. There are also insights into new ways of mining and analysing big data, using online feedback and approaches to involving patients in making sense of feedback and driving improvements.
Hospital complaints
Healthwatch has published Shifting the mindset: a closer look at hospital complaints. This report investigates how well NHS hospital trusts communicate about their work on complaints. It presents the findings of the investigation and set out recommendations for improvement in the complaints handling and management system at a national and a local level.
SpeakUp2020
Healthwatch has launched a new campaign SpeakUp2020 to encourage people to speak up about what would make health and social care services in their communities better. The results will be shared with decision makers across the NHS, social care sector and Government to ensure that improvements to services are informed by people’s experiences.
Fracture Liaison Service Database
The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership has published Fracture Liaison Service Database – 2019 Annual Report. This annual report presents the results of analysis on secondary fracture prevention care received by patients 50 years and older in England and Wales between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2018. It examines 11 key performance indicators deemed critical for a fracture liaison service to be effective and necessary for service improvement. The report found continued variation in each Key Performance Indicator, particularly for identification and monitoring.
Acute bowel obstruction
The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death has published Acute bowel obstruction: delay in transit. This report highlights the quality of care provided to patients aged over 16 years with a diagnosis of acute bowel obstruction.
Healthy social media
The Mental Health Foundation has published Healthy social media. This report presents the social media experiences of young people and other stakeholders that attended an engage event in May 2019; it offers their recommendations on how to maintain a healthy social media life in regards to body image.
Research in the NHS
The Academy of Medical Sciences has published Transforming health through innovation: integrating the NHS and academia. This report sets out a series of actions to achieve six key outcomes which the Academy believe are essential for enhancing the interface between the NHS and the UK’s academic biomedical and health research sector.
