Patient discharge from hospital to general practice: thematic report 2017-2018 – Healthcare Inspectorate Wales
This review found some problems with the discharge process, including a lack of awareness from some hospital staff on procedures and poor communication with general practices. As a result, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales has made thirteen recommendations to improve the quality of patient discharge.

Older people’s health and social care
The Dunhill Medical Trust has worked with Picker to publish a report Exploring education and training in relation to older people’s health and social care . This report evaluates the education and training landscape for the workforce that cares for older people in the UK. The report has found a need for tailored training, more continuing professional development, and for more recognition and incentives for those choosing a career in health and social care for older people.
Closing five emergency departments in England between 2009 and 2011: the closED controlled interrupted time-series analysis – National Institute for Health Research
This study finds that the closure of emergency departments does not lead to more deaths. The research, which analysed five emergency departments (EDs) in England that were downgraded between 2009 and 2011, found there was no impact on death rates upward or downward, despite patients having to travel further to access emergency care.
Life expectancy in the UK
The King’s Fund have published What is happening to life expectancy in the UK? It looks at how overall life expectancy has changed over time, along with considerations such as the difference in life expectancy between males and females and geographical inequalities.

NHS Employers have updated their routes into nursing infographic. It highlights the costs and benefits of the different nursing supply options and the timescales to be expected to recruit a registered nurse.
