NHS Diabetes Programme
NHS England has published the following factsheets relating to the NHS Diabetes Programme:
- NHS Diabetes Programme: improving outcomes in diabetes – summarises the work of the Diabetes Treatment and Care Programme to date
- NHS Diabetes Programme: digital innovations in diabetes – show how the programmes’ digital work support both the diabetes prevention and treatment and care agendas
- Healthier you: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme fact sheet – provides details of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme and how it supports patients identified at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
Management of stable angina
The Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) has published Management of stable angina. This guideline provides evidence-based recommendations and best practice guidance on the management of patients with stable angina. It covers investigations; the optimum medical treatment to relieve symptoms and the relative benefits of different interventions; provision of patient education; and whether psychological interventions can help improve symptoms and quality of life.
Use of patient data by researchers
Connected Health Cities and The Farr Institute have produced an animation, #datasaveslives, to answer questions about the use of patient data by UK universities, researchers and scientists. The 3 minute animated film has been designed to increase public awareness of how routinely collected NHS data is safely and securely re-used by universities for health research.
Nursing in the digital age
The Queen’s Nursing Institute has published Nursing in the digital age: using technology to support patients at home. This report is based on a survey of over 500 nurses working in the community and seeks to determine how far new healthcare information technology has changed in the last 6 years and how skills and community services have adapted. The report makes a range of recommendations to both provider organisations and commissioners.
Allied health professions supporting patient flow in emergency care
NHS Improvement and NHS England have published Allied health professions supporting patient flow: a quick guide. This guide demonstrates how NHS emergency care can benefit from the skills of allied health professionals (AHPs) and highlights innovative service redesign and the delivery of new care models. Each section gives a brief overview of the contribution AHPs can make to safe, effective patient care and flow, followed by case studies.
Improving effective use of data
Nesta has published Can government stop losing its mind? How network thinking can help us record, find and use what we need. This report sets out how the public sector could benefit from a federated, data-driven approach which provides greater power to its leaders, benefits its participants and users and improves performance through better use of, and structured access to, data.
Rapid cancer diagnostic and assessment pathways
NHS England has published three rapid cancer diagnostic and assessment pathways. These documents set out how diagnosis within 14 days and diagnosis within 28 days can be achieved for the colorectal, lung, and prostate cancer pathways.
Less waste more health
The Royal College of Physicians has published Less waste more health: a health professionals guide to reducing waste. This report explains how health professionals can positively influence societal health and wellbeing by making simple changes to the procurement and disposal of medical supplies. It contains a range of case studies and makes 12 recommendations.
Avoidable mortality in the UK
This ONS bulletin, Avoidable mortality in the UK: 2016, presents figures for avoidable mortality in the UK for 2014 to 2016. Figures are based on a revised definition of avoidable mortality introduced for 2014 data in light a public consultation in 2015
Patient and public involvement in research
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has published Patient and public involvement and engagement plan 2018/19. This document sets out NIHR plans for working with patients, carers and the public to improve the quality and relevance of the research they commission and to raise public awareness of research.
New models of care
The King’s Fund has published Developing new models of care in the PACS vanguards: a new national approach to large-scale change?. This report contains reflections from those who have led the development of the Primary and Acute Care System (PACS) model, nationally and locally. It is not an evaluation of the PACS model or of the new care models programme. The insights will be useful to those constructing future national support programmes intended to facilitate transformation in local health and care systems. The lessons learned will also be relevant to those involved in the ongoing implementation of PACS and similar models.
Cyber-attack on the NHS
The Public Accounts Committee has published Cyber-attack on the NHS. The report finds that the Department of Health and Social Care and its arm’s-length bodies were unprepared for the relatively unsophisticated WannaCry attack and people across the NHS did not know how best to communicate with the Department and other NHS organisations. Lessons have been learned but there is still a lot of work to do to improve cyber-security. The Committee has set a June deadline for the Department to provide an update on costed plans for vital security investment.
MindEd for older people
MindEd for Families has launched MindEd for Older People which is a free web-based resource providing information about mental health issues for older people and their families. The resource is supported by NHS England in partnership with Health Education England.
Equality, diversity and human rights
In anticipation of the seventh Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Week (14-18 May 2018), NHS Employers has issued resources to support organisations in highlighting their work to create a fairer, more inclusive NHS for patients and staff.
Nursing associate role consultation
The Nursing and Midwifery Council has launched a consultation on Proposed standard for the new nursing associate role. As part of its proposals the regulator has outlined its approach to education including ambitious standards of proficiency for the role that will enable nursing associates to deliver first class care. Under the plans nursing associates would be subject to the same revalidation requirements as nurses and midwives when renewing their registration with the NMC as well as the same fitness to practise processes should something go wrong. The consultation closes 2 July 2018.
