The health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, clashed with Professor Stephen Hawking over the weekend about the NHS. Education and training survey
Health Education England’s Technology Enhanced Learning team has launched a survey to discover the views of NHS staff on education and training, The survey aims to find out how staff currently learn, preferences for future learning and the role that technology and digital may play in enhancing learning. The survey closes on 30 September 2017.
Whistleblowers Support Scheme
NHS England has launched the Whistleblowers Support Scheme. This pilot scheme will offer a range of services including career coaching, financial advice and mediation for primary care staff who have suffered as a result of raising concerns about NHS practice. The pilot will run until March 2018.
GP training – consultation outcome
Health Education England (HEE) has published Targeted GP training proposal including changes to extensions to training: consultation outcome. This document details the outcomes of the discussions and consultation on the two parallel and interdependent proposals of ‘Targeted GP Training’ and ‘Amending Rules for extensions to training’ run by HEE between December 2016 and April 2017. It sets out where changes have been made to the proposals outlined in the consultation and provides details of next steps.
Accessible Information Standard
NHS England has issued a revised version of the Accessible Information Standard specification. Organisations are expected to consider the revised specification and the associated ‘change paper’ which details the amendments, in order to ensure they remain compliant.
End of life care: people who have a learning disability
NHS England has published Delivering high quality end of life care for people who have a learning disability. This document provides resources for commissioners, providers and social care staff providing or delivering care to people with a learning disability at the end of their lives.
Polypharmacy in older people
The Centre for Reviews and Dissemination has published Effectiveness Matters: reducing harm from polypharmacy in older people. This document summarises research evidence on approaches that aim to reduce problematic forms of polypharmacy. It concludes a multifaceted person-centred coordinated care approach should underpin efforts to reduce harm from polypharmacy in older people.
NICE Bites: Parkinson’s disease
The July/August 2017 NICE Bites bulletin from the North West Medicines Information Service covers Parkinson’s disease in adults. This publication aims to provide healthcare professionals with a summary of key prescribing points taken from the NICE guidance, NG71. This guideline covers the diagnosis and management of Parkinson’s disease in people aged ≥18 years.
Where next for commissioning?
NHS Providers has published the next of its ‘Provider Voices’ series sharing a chief executive’s view on Where next for commissioning? The chief executive of West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust shares his view in relation to ambulance services. Areas covered include designing pathways for continuous improvement, STPs, diversity of commissioning approaches and providing value for investment in commissioning.
Care of older people in hospital
The Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has published the results of a survey of Gransnet members on hospital care and treatment of an older relative. The survey was open to members who had had an older relative spend time in hospital in the last 12 months and were concerned about the care or treatment that their relative received. The survey results are published in spreadsheet format.

Specialized services quality dashboards – NHS England
These dashboards are designed to provide assurance on the quality of care by collecting information about outcomes from healthcare providers. The dashboards are a key tool in monitoring the quality of services, enabling comparison between service providers and supporting improvements over time in the outcomes of services commissioned by NHS England.
Plans to improve NHS Continuing Healthcare assessment processes – NHS England
This letter outlines revised guidance in relation to NHS Continuing Healthcare assessments in order to promote a reduction in delayed transfers of care. CCGs will be required to review current assessment processes and ensure that the current procedures do not contribute to delays in transfer of care.
