This report outlines the findings of an examination of data from 209 CCGs to assess patient access to medical technology. It finds wide variation in access between the north and south of England and argues that CCG performance against access indicators should be made clearer to patients.
Bridging the health care gap through telehealth: the MedicallHome and ConsejoSano models – Commonwealth Fund
This case study looks at two telehealth models in Mexico and the U.S. targeting low- to middle-income parts of the population. Using a call centre as the point of access, these models have reduced unnecessary use of services and supported patient navigation of local health services.
Report from the UK Shape of Training Steering Group (UKSTSG) – Shape of Training
This report outlines the work of the UKSTSG who are tasked with providing policy advice on NHS workforce planning. It discusses how recommendations in the independent Shape of Training review could be implemented. One of the key recommendations discussed is the need for more generalists and the UKSTSG argues that developing the workforce in this way would support the needs of patients with co-morbidities, provide continuity of care and develop a greater number of doctors working at the interface of primary and secondary care.

Improving services using the Friends and Family Test
The Department of Health commissioned the Policy Innovation Research Unit (PIRU) to investigate whether and how the Friends and Family Test (FFT) contributes to the improvement of services in general practice. The report concludes that if a single item instrument, for example the FFT, is to be used to stimulate quality improvement in general practice, its impact could be improved in four ways by: enhancing the general capacity for managing quality in practices; changing the content of the FFT; improving practice staff understanding the of purpose of FFT; and altering national reporting requirements.
Patient Research Experience Survey
A survey from the NIHR Clinical Research Network shows that nearly 90 per cent of patients had a good experience of participating in clinical research, and 86 per cent would be happy to take part in another research study. Feedback from the survey is intended to support a ‘service improvement’ programme based on patient experience of research, both nationally and locally.
