This briefing highlights concerns that the pressures within the NHS are placing staff under stress and at risk of burnout and the impact that this could have on patient safety. Costs of inpatient falls in hospitals
NHS Improvement has published The incidence and costs of inpatient falls in hospitals. This review provides an overview of the scale of inpatient falls and the benefits to the NHS if the rate of falls was reduced in hospitals. It examines the incidence of inpatient falls in hospital; the estimated costs hospitals incur as a result of inpatient falls; the potential cost savings from reducing falls by implementing well-evidenced multidisciplinary interventions; and potential savings to hospitals from taking these actions.
‘Eating for two’ pregnancy myth
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has highlighted the publication of a survey, to understand women’s perceptions of how much they should eat during pregnancy. The survey, commissioned by the National Charity Partnership,, found 69 per cent of women are unaware of how many extra calories they need to consume during pregnancy. The RCOG is working with the National Charity Partnership to bust the ’eating for two’ myth and make it easier for people to understand how to make healthy choices during pregnancy to avoid unhealthy weight gain.
Mesh implants
NHS England has published Mesh Oversight Group Report. This document sets out progress to fulfil the recommendation set out in the Mesh Working Group interim report. The work aims to address concerns over the use of mesh devices implanted in the pelvic region to treat stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. The report, aimed at CCGs, GPs and hospitals, sets out steps to improve care as well as processes for reporting of complications.
