New drive to make sure trust staff sleep on night shifts – HSJ
All 15,000 staff at one of the country’s leading hospitals are being encouraged to take their breaks – including sleep during night shifts – to protect patients.


End of life care for adults: Quality standard [QS13] – NICE
Updates to QS13 March 2017: Statement 11 on care in the last days of life has been removed. This is because NICE has published a quality standard for care of dying adults in the last days of life, which covers this topic in detail and replaces this statement. Some information and links have been updated or removed because resources have moved or are no longer available, for example, the National End of Life Care Programme’s End of life care quality assessment tool has been withdrawn.


Interventions for prevention of bullying in the workplace – Cochrane Library
Bullying has been identified as one of the leading workplace stressors, with adverse consequences for the individual employee, groups of employees, and whole organisations. Employees who have been bullied have lower levels of job satisfaction, higher levels of anxiety and depression, and are more likely to leave their place of work. Organisations face increased risk of skill depletion and absenteeism, leading to loss of profit, potential legal fees, and tribunal cases. It is unclear to what extent these risks can be addressed through interventions to prevent bullying. To explore the effectiveness of workplace interventions to prevent bullying in the workplace.


Mission impossible? Demands on NHS trusts
NHS Providers has published Mission impossible?  The NHS provider ask in 2017/18.  The report presents an assessment of the demands that are being places on NHS trusts through the NHS planning guidance.  It sets out the challenges facing the NHS and how these could be made more deliverable.  It also assesses the patient impact of continuing on the current performance trajectory.


Alcohol e-learning resources
Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare has updated the Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice e-learning programme.  This programme is intended to help professionals deliver advice to individuals whose drinking may impact on their health.  The course is available for delivery in primary care, community pharmacy, hospitals and dental teams.


Flu immunisation programme 2017-18
The Department of Health, Public Health England and NHS England have published National flu immunisation programme plan for 2017 to 2018.  The flu plan sets out a coordinated and evidence-based approach to planning for, and responding to, the demands of influenza across England.  It provides an overview of the co-ordination and the preparation for the flu season and signposting to further guidance and information.  It is supported by the annual flu letter and includes details about the extension of the flu vaccination programme to children.


NHS Improvement resources

NHS Improvement has published the following resources:

  • Displaying referral to treatment data – example dashboard to identify and predict performance issues
  • Safe, sustainable and productive staffing in mental health services – resource to help standardise safe, sustainable and productive staffing decisions in mental health services
  • Safe, sustainable and productive staffing: an improvement resource for the district nursing service– resource to help standardise safe, sustainable and productive staffing decisions in the district nursing service
  • National guidance on learning from deaths– framework to help standardise and improve how NHS providers identify, report, investigate and learn from deaths.
