Submit a GREATix, (not just) a DATIX – A Learning From Excellence Initiative – NHS Academy of Fabulous Stuff
In healthcare we often focus on errors in an effort to learn from our mistakes and avoid further harm. Unfortunately this fails to recognise that the vast majority of what we do on a daily basis is not only good but is practice that improves outcomes and should be shared. Our focus on error means sadly a lot of this excellent practice is missed. “Learning From Excellence”, is a growing movement in healthcare aiming to redress the balance and recognise these examples. It is in response to this we developed GREATix.
Delayed discharges and hospital type
The Centre for Health Economics has published Delayed discharges and hospital type: evidence from the English NHS (Research paper 133). This report investigates how delayed discharges vary by hospital type and the extent to which such differences can be explained by demography, casemix, the availability of long-term care and hospital governance. It finds that a greater local supply of long-term care (care home beds) is associated with fewer delays. Hospitals which are Foundation Trusts have fewer delayed discharges whereas mental health trusts have more delayed discharges than acute trusts but a smaller proportion of them are attributed to the NHS.

Deficits in the NHS 2016 – The King’s Fund
Unaudited figures indicate that NHS commissioners (clinical commissioning groups and NHS England) and providers in aggregate ended 2015/16 in deficit for the second year running. This briefing draws on data from our quarterly monitoring reports, secondary research and interviews with health care leaders to consider commissioner and provider finances in the round and to provide an overview of the factors that have led to the NHS going into deficit. It goes on to outline some of the strategies being employed to restore financial balance, before drawing together our thoughts on the implications of these strategies for the NHS this year and in the longer term.

This report records the thoughts of participants from 17 nations convened to discuss their countries’ approach to health and provide insight into shifting to a health ideology rooted in broader, more preventative measures. The participants sought to address the value of wellbeing; the roles of businesses, government and civil society actors in promoting health; and health justice.
