The past decade has seen rapid development and adoption of technologies that change the way we live. But which technologies will have a similarly transformative impact on health and care? The King’s Fund has looked at some examples of innovative technology-enabled care that are already being deployed in the NHS and internationally to transform care. Now, we examine the technologies most likely to change health and care over the next few years.Some of the technologies we discuss are on the horizon – others are already in our pockets, our local surgeries and hospitals. A zero cost way to reduce missed hospital appointments – Department of Health
This randomised controlled trial tested the effectiveness of the reminder message sent to outpatients. Results showed if the message included the specific cost to the NHS of not attending then the patient was more likely to attend or rearrange their appointment – rather than miss it.


Considerations For Determining Local Health And Care Economies – Monitor
The NHS planning guidance, Delivering the Forward View: NHS planning guidance 2016/17 to 2020/21 asks every health and care system to produce its own sustainability and transformation plan (STP). One of the first steps in this process is for local health and care systems to agree the geographic scope of their STP. Hospital trust admits rotas denied nurses sufficient rest – Health Service Journal
Nurses at East Cheshire Trust have been working shifts which failed to ensure they had the legal minimum number of rest hours. The trust admitted a problem with its e-rostering system had meant nurse rotas were not compliant with the European Working Time Directive.

‘Just Do It’ – Why Nott? New treatment plan helps severe sickness in pregnancy – Academy of Fabulous NHS Stuff
Women with hyperemesis were routinely admitted to hospital for their treatment which included use of anti-sickness preparation and correction of dehydration. This resulted in hospital stay of few days leading to disruption of family life and also an admission to emergency ward at Queen’s Medical Centre.  The solution was clinical teams at NUH have worked with GPs to develop new treatment guidelines to prevent overnight hospital admissions and get women the help they need before the condition worsens.

Case study of using a storage trolley to solve storage problems relating to patient positioning equipment used in Gynaecology and Urology surgery.  Reduces trip hazards, damage to other equipment and reduce manual handling risks.


Health Education England reveals plan to deliver 80k additional NHS staff – Health Service Journal
More than 80,000 additional healthcare staff will be trained to work in the NHS over the next five years, according to newly published plans by Health Education England.
