Praise and gratitude marks International Nurses Day – NHS England
A video by Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England, has been released to mark International Nurses Day and International Day of the Midwife.
In the video, Jane looks at:
- The focus of the NHS Five Year Forward View on preventing ill health, promoting health and wellbeing, and working with patients and communities in delivering new models of care
- The Shape of Caring Review and the importance of investing in consistently high quality education and training for nurses, midwives and care assistants
- The principles of the recently relaunched Nursery and Midwifery Council Code.

New ministers join DH in reshuffle – Health Service Journal
David Cameron has appointed two new health ministers in his government reshuffle, following the reappointment of Jeremy Hunt as health secretary. Alistair Burt is the new minister of state at the Department of Health, while Ben Gummer has been appointed parliamentary under secretary of state.

NHS England backtracks in Project Diamond funding battle- Health Service Journal
One of the country’s most prestigious teaching hospital trusts has said it will record a ‘small surplus’ for the financial year 2014-15 after winning its battle with NHS England over specialised funding. In March, University College London Hospitals Foundation Trust reported a potential deficit of £16.5m because it had only been offered £5m of “Project Diamond” funding, compared to the £20m it received in 2013-14. The money is intended to compensate teaching hospitals for the loss of training funds and reflect the higher cost of the specialist work they do.

Hospital admissions for stroke in people aged 40-54 years
An analysis of hospital admission data by the Stroke Association has found that the number of people aged between 40 and 54 admitted to hospital following stroke has increased by 46% for men and 30% for women in the last 15 years. It is thought that the rise is due to increasing sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles, and changes in hospital admission practice.
Nearly one in three people are regularly stressed
Results from a survey commissioned by the Mental Health Foundation and undertaken by YouGov show that there are significant numbers of people always or often feeling stressed (29%), anxious (24%) and depressed (17%). The survey was commissioned to highlight this week’s Mental Health Awareness Week The Mental Health Foundation is calling for a national prevention strategy to reduce the risk of people experiencing mental health problems and for mindfulness to be made available in all areas.
