Enabling integrated care in the NHS – Monitor
Monitor’s latest guidance on integrated care looks at how healthcare providers and commissioners can enable better integration of care so services are less fragmented and easier for patients to access. Monitor as the health sector regulator has a legal duty to consider how it can enable integrated care where this improves the quality, outcomes or efficiency of services or reduces inequalities of access or outcomes. The regulator has various powers that help it to:
- remove barriers
- consider how to enable integrated care provision including stopping things that block it
- actively support the sector
But what about competition and integration – Monitor’s view is that “competition and integration are not mutually exclusive and that competition does not and should not have to come at the expense of beneficial co-ordination.”

Busting bureaucracy: collaborative audit findings and recommendations – Health & Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC)
This report makes a series of recommendations to help acute trusts spend less time on paperwork and more time providing direct care to patients. The HSCIC has been working with 16 acute trusts in England to understand local burdens of bureaucracy, since a pledge to increase efficiency and reduce burden was made last year by the Secretary of State for Health. The recommendations relate to controlling burden and bureaucracy, implementing processes and technology adoption.
Take staff support seriously with Schwartz rounds – HSJ
Schwartz rounds, where healthcare staff come together to discuss the challenges of their jobs, are being taken up across the NHS and show that staff support is finally being taken seriously ,.. Staff who work in the NHS also deal with people who are distressed, yet there is often little support or indeed, any opportunity for staff to share their experiences or debrief with colleagues.
