The chest, abdominal and musculoskeletal X-ray chapters contain step-by-step approaches to interpreting and presenting X-rays. Each of these chapters then covers 20 common and important X-ray cases/diagnoses, which a junior doctor should be able to confidently identify. The content is in line with the Royal College of Radiologists’ Undergraduate Radiology Curriculum 2012, making it up to date and relevant to today’s students and junior doctors. The layout is designed to make the book as clinically relevant as possible; the X-rays are presented in the context of a clinical scenario. The reader is asked to “present their findings” before turning over the page to reveal a model X-ray report accompanied by a fully annotated version of the X-ray. This encourages the reader to look at the X-ray thoroughly, as if working on a ward, and come to their own conclusions before seeing the answers. To further enhance the clinical relevance, each case has 5 clinical and radiology-related multiple-choice questions with detailed answers. These are aimed to test core knowledge needed for exams and working life, and illustrate how the X-ray findings will influence patient management. One of the keys to X-ray interpretation is practice, practice and more practice. The bonus X-ray chapter provides over 50 further X – ray cases to help consolidate the reader’s knowledge and provide an opportunity to practice the skills they have learnt. In addition to these four core chapters the introductory chapter covers the (very) basic science behind X-rays, the relevant legislation controlling X-rays and tips on how to request radiology examinations. Additionally a chapter is devoted to other important imaging investigations, such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound, covering the details of what the examinations involve, their common indications and contraindications and key imaging findings. The Unofficial Guide to Radiology is written by both radiologists and clinicians, and reviewed by a panel of medical students to ensure its relevance.

Supply Chain Management For Dummies helps you connect the dots between things like purchasing, logistics, and operations to see how the big picture is affected by seemingly isolated inefficiencies. Your business is a system, made of many moving parts that must synchronize to most efficiently meet the needs of your customers and your shareholders. Interruptions in one area ripple throughout the entire operation, disrupting the careful coordination that makes businesses successful; that′s where supply chain management (SCM) comes in. SCM means different things to different people, and many different models exist to meet the needs of different industries. This book focuses on the broadly–applicable Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) Model: Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, Return, and Enable, to describe the basic techniques and key concepts that keep businesses running smoothly.

Whether you′re in sales, HR, or product development, the decisions you make every day can impact the supply chain. This book shows you how to factor broader impact into your decision making process based on your place in the system.

  • Improve processes by determining your metrics
  • Choose the right software and implement appropriate automation
  • Evaluate and mitigate risks at all steps in the supply chain
  • Help your business function as a system to more effectively meet customer needs

We tend to think of the supply chain as suppliers, logistics, and warehousing but it′s so much more than that. Every single person in your organization, from the mailroom to the C–suite, can work to enhance or hinder the flow. Supply Chain Management For Dummies shows you what you need to know to make sure your impact leads to positive outcomes.

In some ways, movement disorders are amongst the most obvious of neurological disorders; without any special examination techniques beyond simple observation, most movement disorders can be readily appreciated. But how can one take these basic observations and translate them into diagnostic formulations, appropriate investigation, and even treatment? In a specialty where there are few diagnostic tests, and where lists of differential diagnoses of the six main movement disorders seem to expand every week, how does the clinician approach the patient with a movement disorder? This book is designed to guide the reader through this process. This book attempts to build a route from careful targeted history taking and examination through to appropriate investigation and practical treatment advice. Although focus has been kept on the commoner movement disorders, in particular Parkinson’s disease, it has also been ensured that the book is comprehensive by including details of rarer movement disorders, highlighting their clinical features and explaining when they should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

Antimicrobial agents either kill (bactericidal) or inhibit (bacteriostatic) the growth of a microorganism by targeting specific unique bacterial sites or metabolic pathways. Common antibiotic adverse effects and toxicities include allergic reactions, numerous possible toxicities, alteration of human flora, drug interactions, and promoting of antibiotic resistance. Presumptive and empirical therapy relies on the clinical syndrome and anatomical site of infection. Factors to consider when choosing empirical therapy include identification of the organism, the estimated benefit to the patient, the probable susceptibility of the isolated (or suspected) pathogen based on laboratory results or local epidemiological parameters, and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic considerations. Host factors, including age, immune deficiency status, and other underlying conditions, should always be considered when choosing an antibiotic. There are few absolute indications for the prophylactic use of antimicrobials, and this is one area where misuse is common. The susceptibility of common pathogens is often predictable, allowing adequate empirical treatment. The main driver for the development of antibiotic resistance is the inappropriate use of antibiotics. Bacteria may be naturally resistant or may acquire resistance by means of DNA mutation or acquisition of resistance-conferring DNA from another source (e.g. plasmids). Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance include chemical modification of antibiotics, reduced uptake into cells, active efflux from cells, target site modification, overproduction of antibiotic target, and metabolic bypass of inhibited reaction. Control of resistance may be achieved through adherence to prescribing guidelines, restriction policies that reduce the use of certain antibiotics, and antimicrobial stewardship programmes

The focus is on medical management, rather than surgical dermatology, i.e. no surgical techniques/procedures. We provide a framework for analysing clinical signs, so that you can develop your diagnostic expertise, and a practical approach to management with answers to questions such as ‘What should I ask?’, ‘What should I look for?’, or ‘What should I do?’. The content has been thoroughly revised and updated with a new chapter on genodermatoses, as well as expanded chapters devoted to cutaneous tumours, cutaneous adverse drug reactions (including new chemotherapeutic agents), paediatrics (including paediatric vascular malformations), and rheumatology (new classification criteria for cutaneous lupus erythematosus). We discuss common or important conditions (and some fascinating rarities), including skin infections and infestations, inflammatory dermatoses (e.g. psoriasis, eczema, acne, urticaria), blistering diseases, oral and genital ulcers, skin tumours, vasculitis, lymphoedema, and leg ulcers. The section on emergency dermatology will help you to recognize and manage life-threatening problems such as angio-oedema, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and purpura fulminans. The chapters on skin problems in medical specialties should be of particular interest to trainees working in a variety of areas—we discuss the approach to skin conditions that you may encounter in paediatrics, rheumatology, haematology, nephrology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, obstetrics, geriatrics, neurology, and psychiatry.

The Handbook covers all major medical and surgical specialties, with a new section on paediatrics added for the second edition. Introductory chapters have been included on the development of evidence-based medicine, giving uninitiated readers the tools required to critically analyse and understand medical studies. Complex trials have been distilled to key relevant facts, for quick reference and understanding.
